Singapore Seeks More Filipino Healthcare Workers Amid Rising Demand

New Initiatives to Attract Healthcare Workers

In recognition of the critical role Filipino nurses played during the pandemic, the Singaporean government has introduced new initiatives aimed at:

  • Improving Working Conditions: Efforts are being made to enhance the work environment for healthcare professionals.
  • Increasing Pay: Competitive salaries are being offered to make Singapore a more attractive destination for healthcare workers.

Singapore’s Commitment to Healthcare Recruitment

Singapore is actively working to recruit more healthcare professionals, despite not setting a specific target. The country is focused on attracting additional healthcare staff to support its growing healthcare sector, alongside other expanding industries like information technology and finance. Currently, there are around 200,000 Filipinos in Singapore, with 84% classified as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac noted that the Philippines has been deploying workers with stronger skill sets to Singapore in recent years, with a growing focus on enhancing domestic workers’ skills and training.

Challenges and Controversies

The deployment of healthcare workers has been a contentious issue in the Philippines, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • Government-Imposed Cap: During the pandemic, the Duterte administration imposed a cap on the deployment of healthcare workers to retain enough staff in local hospitals.
  • Criticism: The decision faced backlash, particularly due to the lack of protections and delayed benefits for health workers, some of which were not released until 2024.

Despite these challenges, the Philippines remains a key supplier of healthcare professionals to the global workforce, contributing significantly to the healthcare sectors of many countries.
